WASTED PLASTIC (RECYCLING) RACE AT FABCITY CAMPUS EU2016

On a little island just off Amsterdam’s mainland, two neighborhoods exist: Java and KNSM. The WASTED Plastic Race brings them head-to-head in a 10-week recycling race. The goal is for each neighborhood to get as many households recycling their plastic waste as possible before the finish. Can they reach 100%?

JAVA + KNSM ISLAND COMMUNITIES RACE TO RECYCLE

Racers start at the current local plastic recycling rate: 7.4% of households. During FabCity’s 10 weeks, they race 17 April through 26 June, seeing who can get the most households recycling plastic in their neighborhood. The goal is 100%! Each week, race results are visually displayed on the outer wall of our Plastic Era Pavilion.

Beyond these island communities, the Plastic Race serves as an initiative to spread awareness about plastic recycling and show people worldwide the possibilities that come from locally collecting and (re)using the abundance of this versatile, valuable material.

MORE ON FABCITY AND THE PLASTIC ERA PAVILION

For 10 weeks, a small island just off Amsterdam’s mainland is transformed into a self-sufficient micro-society exploring the future of everyday living. It’s called FabCity. Serving as a temporary home to hundreds of students, academics and professionals, thousands of visitors can find cutting-edge solutions to urban challenges such as food, water, energy, and (plastic) waste.

Bringing the hidden world of local plastic recycling to life at FabCity, CITIES organized a Plastic Era Pavilion. The four-part exhibition brings together elements that are central to redefining our relationship with plastic waste: collection, separation, reprocessing and potential. For a more detailed breakdown, see an overview of the Plastic Era Pavilion here.

FabCity is the cornerstone of the official arts and design cultural program during the Netherlands’ EU presidency 2016: ‘Europe by People: The Future of Everyday Living’, in collaboration with Pakhuis de Zwijger. The Plastic Race is supported by Europe by People and Gemeente Amsterdam Oost.
