FOR MORE, READ FROM HERE: WHAT IS WASTED?

WASTED is a local solutions initiative designed to address global plastic issues at the neighborhood level. The project is realized through a community Laboratory for small-scale plastic waste reprocessing in Amsterdam Noord.

The goal is for the WASTED Laboratory to be an engine of both material and social design, where new objects such as stages, benches and flower planters are created by the community, for the community, together with designers and using locally recycled and reprocessed plastic waste.

WASTED DESIGN: BLOCK, MACHINES AND PROCESS

How do you design a building block out of plastic waste? What types of plastic do you use? How big is it? How do they connect? What machines build it? And how do you turn plastic waste into ready-made material for reprocessing?

These are questions we asked ourselves, together with a group of designers, at the WASTED Design Club. We’ve organized our current design plans into a working Open Source Report.

OPEN SOURCED DESIGN

The WASTED Laboratory is not only a project to locally address plastic waste, but also exists to generate open sourced documents available for the world to use and build on. In this way, open sourcing WASTED design enables anyone to implement a WASTED Laboratory in their neighborhood, or simply further advance sustainable material design and (re)production on the local level. Final Open Source documents will be featured on WASTED’s upcoming new website: wastedlab.nl.

The working Open Source Report outlines our design process – highlighting details of the Block, machines and process. Remaining a work in progress – we need ideas and feedback from more designers, engineers and interested, knowledgeable individuals!

WE’RE ASKING YOU! REVIEW THE OPEN SOURCE REPORT

What do you think? Is the process feasible? Are you an expert in plastic, design, engineering or another relevant field? Do you have constructive feedback? Open the dialogue!

We ask you to give feedback, share with your community and help us generate a fully functioning WASTED Laboratory that spits out top-notch Blocks! Not only benefiting Amsterdam Noord, the final process design, Block design and machinery will also become open source for all to use!

Always feel free to contact Barbara, WASTED Project Manager: barbara(at)citiesfoundation.org. We want to hear from you!
