CITIES will be on the move in the coming weeks, going to Lecce (Italy), NYC, Hong Kong and Taipei, we will be working to bring conceptual urban ownership into local projects, continually pushing for new urban development standards in the name of We Own The City.

Based on the publication’s theme of inclusive urban development practices that strategically bridge actors at the ‘top’ and ‘bottom’, we designed an all new We Own The City Workshop for professionals. Advancing We Own The City’s goals and research, the workshop interactively brings city makers and citizens together to assess, map and tackle areas for new, collaborative development. This month, the workshop begins and the book launches in NYC, Hong Kong and Taipei, cities that offered their stories to bring the publication to life.

Lecce: With CITIES’ Francesca Miazzo leading the session, the We Own The City Open Dialogue for professionals premiers September 26 at the Art Lab in Lecce, Italy, including a critical look at the local situation and interventions from Egbert Fransen, director of Amsterdam’s Pakhuis de Zwijger.

NYC: September 29th, 6:00PM – 7:30PM, we’ll have a book launch party downtown W 37th, New York, at TrimLab, put together with our tremendous partners at Manufacture New York (MNY) and Design Trust for Public Space (DT), who collaborated on putting together the book’s feature case examining MNY’s inclusive stakeholder approach. The evening will kick off with Francesca introducing We Own The City, followed by presentations from Susan Chin, ED of DT, and Rob Sanchez, Chief of Strategy at MNY, closing with moderated Q&A, food, drinks and everything in between. For more on NYC’s launch, check out Design Trust’s event page here. , and join on Eventbrite here.

Hong Kong: Hong Kong has a special relationship to We Own The City, as the book came to life with co-publishing partner, University of Hong Kong (HKU). Now, we have co-organized and are honored to hold a book launch at the University’s Swindon Bookstore on October 10th at 18:30. Co-Editors Francesca Miazzo of CITIES and Tris Kee of HKU are excited to introduce the evening in Hong Kong together, followed by words from the Netherlands Consulate General and an opening address by the acting dean of the Faculty of Architecture at HKU. The event will close with a video on Community Academy. This event is supported by the Netherlands Consulate General and the city’s flagship member of Design Hotels, The Mira Hong Kong.

Taipei: Together with the Center of Community Empowerment Network, we will run a jam-packed five-day event in Taipei. During the book launch party at MONTUE, the Museum of National Taipei University of Education, we will have two days of sessions featuring a range of local chairs and special guests, including a lecture on Farming the City and Roundtable on Asian Urbanism. Before the closing day, we will visit informal settlements at Mt. Toad and the Treasure Hill Village with Professor Min Jay Kang of the National Taiwan University. The event is organized together with the Department of Cultural and Creative Industries Management, National Taipei University of Education (NTUE), and Community Empowerment Network (CENT), and partnered with MONTUE, Community Empowering Society R.O.C., The Urban Design Center and U-Lab.
