Special Feature: Old Amsterdam CRAFTS Tour

One month only starting April, we mingle crafts of the past with present and future innovations in labor, the Old Amsterdam Crafts Tour spotlights historical crafts knowledge to inspire the labor of today, and tomorrow. This tour is in collaboration with De Brakke Grond and in the context of their exhibition ‘Labor of the Day’

While traditional crafts are largely forgotten and unknown, preserved in books and museums, the future crafts of production are also unknown. The difference is, modern industries are actively being researched, tested and implemented as the world of design experiences a significant shift from people to machines in processes of production.

De Brakke Grond and Droog have organized the exhibition “Labor of the Day” (see month long program here) to spotlight the changing landscape of labor, exploring the role of craftsmanship, technology and modes of production in the future of design. In the context of this exhibition, CITIES has collaborated with De Brakke Grond, café and Flemish Cultural Centre, to organize a unique tour: the Old Amsterdam Crafts Tour.

Building on our experience with the Old Amsterdam Food Tour, the Crafts Tour will take you back to a time when, for instance, ‘staalmeesters’, peat carriers, weavers and ship builders dominated the neighborhood and produced goods as traditional craftsmen, and women. While juxtaposing the present, the Crafts Tour is led as a starting point to link the past with the present and explore innovative ideas leading into the labor of tomorrow.

Tours will run April 10, 17, and 24 from 19:00 to 20:30, and on May 1 at 15:00.

Language: April 24th’s tour will be in English, all others in Dutch.
