‘OLD AMSTERDAM FOOD TOUR’ is an initiative by CITIES, which aims to give the citizens of Amsterdam the opportunity to explore the history of their city through the lens of food culture.

Type of activity
Date of the activity
August 2012

Location of the activity
Amsterdam Food Center / Central Market Hall
On Sunday the 26th of August we held our first OLD AMSTERDAM FOOD TOUR, where we invited participants to join a guided bike-tour around the streets of Amsterdam. Together we travelled back in time to see how the city used to organize its food system. We visited several locations that had either a function in food processing or food supply during times of the Industrial Revolution. The bike tour started and ended at the Food Center Amsterdam. Thanks to them, we were able to gather and take shelter from the rain in the beautifull Central Market Hall. Here we relaxed and shared our experiences of the tour, while enjoying some drinks and local finger food. After the tour, the participants were invited to stay and watch our second CITOPIA movie: Waste Land – a reality check about the worlds largest trash dump in Rio de Janeiro.

Thanks to the 18 participants, our first OLD AMSTERDAM FOOD TOUR became a huge success! Despite the stormy and rainy weather, people were committed and showed great interest in the content of the tour. This tour was fully booked, but we are planning to do more tours in the near future.
