Free Space Berlin/Freiräume Berlin - an interactive online map that visualizes the locations of publicly owned plots of land in Berlin.

Like any city government, the city of Berlin is a landowner, and a lot of the land it owns is vacant or unused. But under the controversial policy known as the Liegenschaftsfonds, some of these city-owned lots are being sold by means of a bidding process where monetary value determines the sale. Several Berlin-based advocacy groups believe that public real estate should instead be given to sustainable projects that foster socially and culturally diverse neighborhoods. Where are these lots located, and how can we ensure that they are responsibly developed? How can citizens participate in the process? Free Space Berlin aims to adress these concerns by providing an interactive online map that visualizes the locations of publicly owned plots of land in Berlin.

Free Space Berlin is organized by BMW Guggenheim Lab Team member Corinne Rose with openBerlin—Florian Schmidt, and Jürgen Breiter.
