The fist week of February seems to be really important for food and sustainability lovers in Amsterdam. We are not just talking about private gardens and window tomatoes, Amsterdam is finally taking the food issue as a new opportunity for (social) entrepreneurship and urban innovation. The two events are, of course, fully booked, and CITIES will be there. We will prepare some tasty comments about the results with suggestions and ideas for further action.

On February 8, 2012 from 14h to 18h the event ‘Join the Green Metropole’ takes place in Casa 400 in Amsterdam. This event marks the official start of the new project “Amsterdam Green Metropole” in which various organizations, including the Amsterdam Innovation Motor (AIM), join forces. The project aims at creating an internationally appealing and innovative knowledge and business cluster in the area of clean technology and renewable (energy) transition in the Amsterdam metropolis.

At the event, interactive workshops will be organized based on the seven clusters appointed by the Amsterdam Economic Board. For the cluster ´Food and Flowers´, the main focus is on Urban Agriculture and attention will be given to local food security and sustainability of the food sector in the metropolitan area of Amsterdam. Next to Susanne de Boer, from Rabobank Amsterdam, who will lead the conversation, Anke de Vrieze, from FARMING THE CITY will provide an introduction to this session, to inspire attendants from different sectors (community workers, entrepreneurs and government officials) on sustainable economic opportunities in the food field.

During these workshops, the economic opportunities in the field of sustainability will be mapped by the visitors present. This will be done by means of mindmaps and serve as an inspiration for others, in the concrete implementation of the project “Amsterdam Green Metropole”.

The event is expected to be well attended, with 50-70 participants per workshop and over 500 applications in total! Registration for the event has therefore been closed. CITIES will provide a report of our workshop, pictures and a comment about the launch of this important platform.
